Mercy Academy sophomores gain first-hand service-learning experience

As part of Mercy Academy’s Service-Learning and Leadership Program, sophomores have been immersed in community service, volunteering with a variety of impactful area organizations and institutions. The Service-Learning and Leadership Program emphasizes hands-on learning through direct community involvement.

Throughout the spring semester, the Class of 2028 has taken part in Sophomore Service, a seven-week immersive service-learning experience. Each Tuesday, sophomore students have spent the school day off-campus working alongside community partners, from early childhood education centers to senior living communities, gaining firsthand insights into the needs of the communities they serve.

Students are assigned to a partner organization where they serve others, build relationships, and learn hands-on leadership skills. Through Sophomore Service, they work directly with a range of populations, including older adults, elementary school students, individuals with special needs or young children in preschool or day care settings.

Sophomore Service is part of a comprehensive, four-year service-learning curriculum at Mercy Academy. Rooted in a commitment to leadership and justice, the program challenges students to make an impact through both direct service by addressing immediate needs in the community, and through social action, by addressing root causes of injustice to bring about long-term systemic change.
