For Mercy Academy Volleyball Coach Connie Hulsmeyer, the goal every season is a State Championship title, and this upcoming season is no exception. With an exciting five-set victory against Providence High School in their first "home" opener at St. X High School, the team is already off to a strong start this season.
With almost the entire varsity team returning, this year's squad boasts plenty of experience, complemented by skilled sophomores and freshmen. Senior captain Maddie Green leads the team, which features a talented roster including 2023 6th Region Player of the Year Mady Yaden, senior setter Maia Marin, and promising underclassmen like sophomore Alli Riegling and freshman Nalani Derringer. Additionally, the coaching staff gains a valuable asset in JV Assistant Coach Chris Rutledge, who brings extensive experience to the role.
"Our team chemistry is very positive and supportive," Coach Hulsmeyer said. "Our coaching staff strives to be demanding while still being supportive and expressing confidence in our abilities."
In the off-season, team members have participated in highly competitive club volleyball and dedicated themselves to strength and agility training, either individually or with their club teams. Coach Hulsmeyer noted that the primary areas for improvement are grit, focus and the confidence to win crucial matches. To enhance their mental game, the team is working with a sports psychologist. The team engages in strength and agility training three times a week in the preseason and twice a week during the season.
Additionally, Coach Hulsmeyer emphasized the importance of improving the team's offensive complexity. This includes refining decision-making and focusing on attacking from different zones to execute a variety of shots.
Coach Hulsmeyer is eagerly anticipating significant matchups against schools such as Assumption High School and Sacred Heart Academy, as well as competing in the Durango Classic in Las Vegas. She is also excited about special events on the calendar, including Camper Night (September 12), Future Jag Night (October 14) and a Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
Althought district, regional, and state victories are the ultimate goals, Coach Hulsmeyer measures short-term success by the team's daily improvement and positive response to adversity. This involves coaching each player equally inpractice and forming effective team combinations.
"Everyone in our program is equally important, from our 6th Region Player of the Year to our freshmen managers," she said. "We strive to show each individual their contribution to Mercy volleyball is a key component to our success."
