New STEAM Innovation Center to prioritize sustainable energy use

New STEAM Innovation Center to prioritize sustainable energy use

Through the efforts of the Mercy BOLD Campaign, Mercy Academy is set to construct the new Dr. Sheri Kalbfleisch Innovation Center, a cutting-edge 12,000-square-foot facility on Mercy's campus.

With construction set to begin in 2026, the Innovation Center will feature two advanced STEAM shops, a health science lab equipped with a digital dissection table and mock medical exam room, a technology classroom for the freshman Introduction to STEM course, a faculty wellness room, an outdoor classroom/courtyard, and two large studios dedicated to 2D art and ceramics. Additionally, the center will include four collaborative spaces to enhance Mercy's project-based learning curriculum.

But, in addition to these incredible amenities, the new facility will also stand out in its commitment to sustainable energy use. Designed to be Zero Energy Ready, it will integrate real-world design lessons directly into the curriculum, with the alumnae architect and design team guiding Mercy students through the process.

The new building will utilize a geothermal system to heat and cool the facility, reducing environmental impacts, lowering operational costs and minimizing refrigerants. Through clean energy tax credits, this system will lower both initial and operational costs and aim for a 35% energy reduction compared to traditional HVAC systems. Additional energy-saving features include decoupled outside air ventilation, demand control ventilation, variable Volume control and LED lighting.

These features reflect Mercy's willingness to be forward-thinking not only in student success but also in ensuring future investments are environmentally sustainable. Bringing this visionary initiative to life will rely on the support of forward-thinking donors and advocates who share this commitment.
