Mercy Day Scholarships

Mercy Day Scholarships are made possible through the generosity of members of the greater Mercy community. These scholarships provide awards to families that are directly applied to tuition. Mercy Day Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. In order to be selected to receive a Mercy Day Scholarship, families must apply and qualify for financial assistance (determined by FACTS) and complete a scholarship application. Incoming freshmen and current students are invited to apply.

Margaret Kotich Merker Memorial

Drs. Stephen and Sharon Merker established this scholarship in 2021 in memory of Margaret Kotich Merker. Margaret, a Hungarian immigrant, worked tirelessly at several factory jobs to ensure her three children received a Catholic education. Her son, Stephen, was a member of the initial Board of Directors of Mercy serving as vice president. He then became the first lay president of the board. Sharon grew to love and value Mercy, as well, and has extended that love to her parents, Kenny and Tillie Machtolff. They, along with Steve and Sharon, donated the clockworks for the bell tower on Mercy’s campus. The clockworks came from the Cathedral of Assumption in Louisville where it kept time for many years.

This scholarship was established in 2022 by past Mercy parents, Jenifer and John Daunhauer, in memory of John's grandmother, Mary Alice Gregg Byerly, Class of 1922. The Daunhauers want to ensure that all learners can benefit from the intimate and individualized curriculum at Mercy.

This scholarship honors and recognizes the commitment that Nancy J. and Phillip O. Akers gave to their three daughters, Debbie '83, Dena '85 and Darla '87. They provided all three girls with a high-quality Mercy education, which in turn inspired the girls to continue to pay it forward as educators.

This scholarship was established in memory of Patricia Higgins '55 by her daughter, Jan Newcomb. Pat remained forever grateful for her Catholic education: Holy Cross Grade School and Mercy Academy - Class of 1955. Throughout her life Pat displayed a youthful energy, enjoyed learning and had an inquiring mind. She never met a stranger and always made time to listen to and comfort someone in need, especially young girls and women. Pat was honest, wise, non-judgmental and most importantly, kind.
