Peyton Arnold: Triple Threat

In the dynamic realm of high school athletics, few students embody versatility and dedication quite like Mercy Academy senior Peyton Arnold. Peyton has been a fixture on the fields and courts of Mercy Academy throughout her high school journey, excelling in softball, basketball and soccer.

Playing all four years in each sport, Peyton has left an indelible mark as a Jaguar. From guarding the goal in soccer to leading the charge as a forward in basketball and commanding the diamond as a catcher in softball, Peyton has embodied versatility and skill.

This sense of versatility started long before high school for Peyton. Throughout grade school, she said she juggled various sports, never experiencing an off-season. Field hockey, cross country, track and even powderpuff football are some of the sports that found their way into her schedule over the years.

"I don't know what to do if I don't play each sport," she said. "I've got to keep going."

At Mercy Academy, Peyton has helped her teams achieve greatness, including district titles in softball and soccer, multiple state appearances in basketball, as well as regional and district triumphs in both softball and basketball.

"Mercy Academy not only supports you as a student, but as an athlete," she said. "Mercy gives so many opportunities to be successful at any sport. We have coaches that push you to be your best. Mercy has amazing facilities for every sport which supports our athletic goals."

Though she has consistently stayed committed to athletics throughout her time at Mercy Academy, Peyton has also managed to excel in academics, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in high school. She said growing up balancing academics with a variety of extracurricular activities has prepared her for success in both.

"Sports teaches you time management," she said. "Growing up with it, I learned how to manage my time and it stuck with me."

Peyton said Mercy Academy's ethos of encouraging multi-sport athletes has also played a pivotal role in her journey.

"That's what I really love about it here," she said. "They encourage you to do more and be who you want to be instead of just limiting you to certain options."

While she is proficient in various sports, Peyton said softball is her true forte, having been her longest-standing athletic pursuit, and following graduation, it will become her primary athletic focus. Peyton has committed to playing Division 1 Softball with Bellarmine University, continuing her academic and athletic journey at the Louisville-based university. Led by head coach Caitlyn de la Haba, the Bellarmine Knights Softball Team is in its fourth season in Division 1 after joining the ASUN Conference in the 2020-2021 season.

"I want to thank Coach de la Haba for seeing my potential and giving me this opportunity to play D1 softball," Peyton said in a statement following her announcement last summer. "I couldn't have done it without my parents, family, coaches, teammates and friends."

Reflecting on her time playing softball and her future journey with the sport, Peyton said her love of the game goes far beyond the field and scoreboard.

"I play softball because I love the game, but that's not all of it," she said. "I play softball for the life lessons it teaches. It has taught me leadership, patience, teamwork, how to deal with pressure and that it is OK to fail. I play softball for my teammates that I call my sisters and I play for me."
